Flood Preparedness & Safety Checklist
When the rain won’t stop, a little preparation can keep you and your family safe.
💧 Before a Flood
☐ Clear drains and gutters around your house
☐ Move electrical items and valuables to higher ground
☐ Keep important documents in a waterproof pouch
☐ Prepare an emergency bag (torchlight, power bank, dry food, water, basic meds, clothing)
☐ Charge phones and power banks early
☐ Keep your car fuelled in case evacuation is needed — but never drive into unsafe water
☐ Save emergency contacts and official alert channels
☐ Plan a meeting point and identify the nearest relief centre
☐ Evacuate early if water levels begin to rise or when advised by authorities
🚨 During a Flood
☐ Follow official instructions and move to higher ground immediately if told to evacuate
☐ Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters — even shallow water can be dangerous
☐ Turn off electricity and gas at the main switch if it’s safe to do so
☐ Keep your family together and stay on upper floors if trapped
☐ Stay updated using reliable news or official apps
☐ Conserve your phone battery for emergency use
💦 After a Flood
☐ Wait for official clearance before returning home
☐ Do not switch on electricity until it’s been checked by a qualified person
☐ Wear gloves and boots when cleaning up
☐ Disinfect items and surfaces that came into contact with floodwater
☐ Photograph damage for insurance or assistance claims
☐ Restock your emergency bag once everything settles
