Fire Safety at Home Checklist

Fires can start in seconds — but prevention only takes minutes.

🏠 Around the House
☐ Check that all electrical cords are in good condition (no frays or loose plugs)
☐ Avoid overloading extension cords or plug points
☐ Keep matches, lighters, and candles out of children’s reach
☐ Store flammable liquids (paint, oil, gas) in safe, ventilated areas
☐ Keep escape paths (doors and hallways) clear of clutter

🍳 Kitchen Safety
☐ Never leave cooking unattended — especially frying or boiling oil
☐ Keep a lid nearby to smother small fires
☐ Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills
☐ Clean stove area and hood filters regularly (remove grease build-up)
☐ Switch off gas and electrical appliances after use

⚡ Electrical & Appliances
☐ Turn off unused switches and unplug non-essential items before bed
☐ Use certified electrical appliances only
☐ Test smoke alarms (if installed) every month
☐ Replace faulty wiring or tripping plugs immediately
☐ Use surge protectors for valuable electronics

🚪 Emergency Readiness
☐ Identify two escape routes for every room
☐ Practice a family fire escape drill at least once a year
☐ Keep a small fire extinguisher in the kitchen or hallway
☐ Store emergency numbers (BOMBA 994, hospital, family contacts)
☐ Know how to use the extinguisher — “Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep”
